Benefits and Limitations of Static Headspace and Purge-and-Trap for the Analysis of VOCs

چکیده

Static headspace analysis can provide reasonably good sensitivity for halogenated hydrocarbons and aromatic compounds. But USEPA Method 524.2 Revision 4 requires the evaluation of several analytes containing different functional groups such as ketones, ethers, and esters. Such compounds can be particularly difficult to analyze at low concentration using static headspace due to the affinity of polar analytes for the aqueous sample matrix. The same problem can occur with purge-and-trap, but the technique of dynamic extraction allows greater sensitivity over a static equilibrium process. In this paper, static headspace sampling is compared with purge-and-trap for the gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of the USEPA Method 524.2 Rev. 4 target compounds.

Identification of volatile organic compounds of some Trichoderma species using static headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Fungi release wide spectrum of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that belong to several chemical groups with different biochemical origins such as monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, alcohols, aldehydes, aromatic compounds, esters, furans, ketones, sulfur and nitrogen compounds. Trichoderma species are the most studied fungal biocontrol agents and are successfully used as biofungicides and biofertili...

Detection of petroleum-contaminated soils using EQUILIBRIUM HEADSPACE and METHANOL EXTRACTION

Introduction Petroleum spills and leaking underground storage tanks comprise a significant portion of remediation projects. Soil removal and disposal is determined based on the contaminants and concentrations present. Specific target analytes are associated with this type of contamination. A number of these compounds are classified as volatile organics and are used to assess the severity of the...

Recent Advances in Microextraction Methods for Sampling and Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds in Air: A Review

Human exposures to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are associated with a wide range of health problems. Due to these adverse effects of VOCs on the human health, determination of trace levels of VOCs is very important for accurate assessment of indoor and outdoor exposure. Solid phase microextraction (SPME), needle trap device (NTD) and hollow fiber- liquid phase microextraction (HF-LPME) are...

Comparison of Static and Dynamic Headspace for Volatile Organic Compounds in Orange Juice

The determination of VOCs is widely used in many fields of chemistry. Two common sample preparation techniques for this analysis are static and dynamic headspace. Static headspace is a relatively simple sampling method that is dependent upon the formation of equilibrium conditions in a closed system. Dynamic headspace continually sweeps the headspace of the sample concentrating the analytes ont...

Seasonal Variation in Floral Scent of Persian Musk Rose (Rosa moschata Hermm.)

The seasonal variation of volatile oil compositions (VOCs) from fresh flowers of Persian Musk rose was investigated by Combi PAL Headspace Techniques. In this study, a total number of 21 VOCs were detected by headspace on the Combi PAL System and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC/MS) from Rosa moschata Herrm. at different seasons which was representing 92.53-99.37% of total VOCs. The ...
